Rescue

Cradled in cold concrete,
Tired, fallen and dead,
Lives that once held hope,
...reduced to memories now,
Like scars from wounds that have bled
A kinship of deep comfort
An intimacy dark and complete,
Fate smiles in calibrated silence,
...at the rescue in oblivious attempts
Fighting shy of light, in a landscape so barren and bleak.

Purpose

Freshly awashed yet seemingly dead
The conch rests on a rocky bed
Awaiting a trampling foot that’ll set it free
From its stubborn inertia of salt fed misery

As dawn to dusk attempts its break
Cold yet content it lies in wait
In search of its shadow now lost at sea,
Only to be found by the wandering devotee.

Out at sea...

Moody blues
Sunset views
Emotions running high
Feelings churning anew

The wind in the hollow
Waves blanket the shore
A pit in the stomach
That unsure feeling once more

Life happens suddenly
People in it too
Bonds built in hope
Others broken, you rue

You learn,
You grow.
You become,
The flow

It isn’t easy
But life’s gotta’ go...
Crash into rocks sometimes
You have to battle the low

You’re the victim
You’re the muse
You’re the hero
Only you get to choose

Moving forward isn’t easy
Going backwards no more
Swimming the ocean of hope
Someday you’ll land ashore.

Flight

Through trials and tribulations,
I will cry again.

Maybe another thousand deaths,
I will die again.

But I won’t give up,
I will try again.

The curse of my belief this is,
I will rise again.

Like a Phoenix, from the ashes,
I will fly again.

The sky is my abode,
I will fly again.

So long, Farewell 2017

As the old year makes way for the new,
Pat yourself for having come through,
Acknowledge the hits, reflect on your misses too...
Remember life continues in the way it should,
You will nurse feelings of happiness at times and, also be subject to the blues...
New beginnings will be many, closures a few,
Don’t loose sight of the goal-post, but enjoy your journey too!

And that folks, in sum and substance, is my  new year message for you.
Wishing you the start of memorable journey as you draw the curtains on this one.

- Mark.

Bon voyage!

Here Comes the Rain.

Streaking across my window pane,
comet like trickles of the summer rain...
Hedonism invites you with thunder claps
come play with me now, it's a free-spirited game!

Blurred visions flood a smokescreen-ish terrain,
Furtive glances coyly court each other in shame.
Cottony clouds manoeuvre their freshly ploughed lanes
Happiness is a mirage, in the dark desert of fame.

Now searching, now longing...
lost, weatherbeaten, but always untamed...
A soulful outpouring this, of suppressed emotion...
the monsoon is here...in celebration of pain!

Twilight

Lead me down the backdoor,
Along the corridors of your mind.
I see a soul there searching,
Lost in the graveyard of time.

There lies buried and forgotten,
Solitude for company to keep,
Half baked dreams in deep slumber,
Free fallen leaves of dry twigs.

Of recurrent sunrise and sunsets...
and a heart beat that’s heard no more
Flowers burn in love and grief…
Things fall apart, dreams lie dead.

Alice in Cinderland

She sits by the window, head in hand,
Lost in her mystic Wonderland.
Where fairies fly free, across the sky
And a beanstalk stretches, a million feet high.

In a world where true love is a wish away, she'll laugh and tease and play all day...now hoping, now dreaming, now smiling and scheming...then sing and dance as if time were all hers and here to stay.

Midnight hour creeps upon her, anxiety sweating down her neck.

Her courage strangulated; creeper-like grip of fear choking her breath.

Joys she'd known, dull and seem to fade away.
She must now forget these, conceal her smiles, consume her pain.

With stairs winding, the day long gone, darkness is blinding, she carries on...one glass slipper fallen, the other worn tight, the only way ahead is the one in sight.

Pained at the thought, no angst she will show. This is no fairytale, she knows...the curse of her choice, deal with it, she must, blow by blow.

But when the lights are cool and dim,
And the sky is fringed with a starry trim
She sits by the window, head in hand
Lost again in her mystic Wonderland.

Streams in the Desert

They tell me I must bruise
The rose's leaf,
Ere I can keep and use
Its fragrance brief.

They tell me I must break
The skylark's heart,
Ere her cage song will make
The silence start.

They tell me love must bleed,
And friendship weep,
Ere in my deepest need
I touch that deep.

And I ask, must it always be so
With precious things?
Must they always be bruised and go
With beaten wings?

"Ahh, yes boy! by crushing days,
By caging nights, by scar
Of thorn and stony ways,"
Life tells me, "these blessings are!"

"The mark of rank in nature
is capacity for pain;
And the anguish of the singer
Makes for the sweetest symphony strain."

Farewell Chennai. Mumbai here I come for good~!

Odyssey...

Finally, it's that time of the year again - a time most eagerly awaited and yet a time of uneasy trepidition of what the future holds in store.

Temperatures may have dropped to cause a chill in the winter air, but the mood is laden with a hue of fragrances. Like a seasoned sommelier, I can tell that this aromatic bouquet has a tantalizing effect on my senses and an uplifting one on my spirits...

...that sweet whiff of nostalgic sentiment, the fresh aroma of renewed commitment and resolve to come back stronger in the coming year, that scented air of optimism laced with new-found purposefulness and that ever contagious brewing current of gusto and vigour.

Well, and what gives me reason to stay hopeful, you may dryly ask, in the face of the seductive and lathered trappings of the all engaging soap that is life? Of hope in the times of Sex crimes, AIDS, tsunamis, global warming, terrorism, corrupt governments and economic inequities...all demanding our immediate attention, like there was no tomorrow?

Well, I can't absolve myself completely of blame for being hooked on to this chequered gameboard of life - much like a pawn held captive by the grip that directs it. You see, now, that is a condition which is virtually universal. However, I have been a tad more fortunate than most to have seen people - (extra)ordinary people - summon the courage required of them to change the rules of the game and play by their terms rather than being played puppet in the hands of destiny.

Uncannily, each was, in their own way, unknown to them, called upon to play a key part in completing the on-going miracle - that of the triumph of human spirit - as it carefully unwound the canvas of their lives. That, in a subtle yet gritty display of what it took to make sense of their world in the face of a doom that stared them in the face at a point-blank range.

And where did they find courage to stay put through it all? To this, they all but said this: "It is was as easy or difficult as changing the point from which they viewed it."

Simple truth of life now, ain't that?

Fortunate are those who realise it. For they will begin to play their part in the larger scheme of things of life; a part that will largely define their lives thereon and bring meaning to it, in the light of the decisions they make.

For the rest, it would mean a mere "existence" in this otherwise 'instant-two-minute' and 'big-is-beautiful' world, wherein they'd remain content with admiring the wrappings and never look inside the box, failing to take cognition of the slow but definite little miracles that keep happened around them all the time!

Yet, all is not lost. For, if there was ever a time for rejeuvenation of the body, the mind or the heart, then this has to be it! For it is now - at New Year's - that the fountain of hope springs to life in its attempt to touch unfathomable heights and thereby unleash the greatest miracle of them all - that of human potential.

And so as the New Year dawns upon us, let us re-commit ourselves to strenghtening our bond with humanity and our belief in people. However more importantly than most, let us learn to believe in ourselves and ungrudgingly give ourselves a second chance. A chance to open our hearts to love and accept ourselves wholly and unconditionally.

For if miracles are to happen, we first need to believe that we're worthy of them and hope in them strongly enough for them to actually happen.

A figment of my imagination, you say? Well, to each his own. But for me, I can tell 'cause I've seen it ring true for me in more ways than one all through this past year.

Happy New Year everybody!

May the new year bring us all more of what we love. May the force be with us and many good things to us.

I sail over still waters,
forewarned they run deep…
Strength for ores, paddling life’s currents,
Amidst curdled thought but structured flow.
Confidence and fear battle it out,
amidst resilient efforts to win…
I journey the unknown,
In silent contemplation of sin.
Gravity hangs my head in shame,
Hope disappoints, leaving me lame.
Like a star having risen, when others have set,
I set forth to capture my time in fame

India Talkies

The frozen wind
Passes through me;
Fallen leaves,
Borrowing it's energy,
To regain life
For brief moments.

I trudge on,
Searching for the life,
That I once knew;
Lost now,
In a shadow
Of mimicking normalcy.

The nights have grown cold.

Thoughts once charged
With emblazoned passion
Have cooled to embers;

Ignited only by carefree and callous airs,
Of materialistic mornings and socialite evenings

I’m reduced to just a mere outline;
Vacuous, I lay in wait...
...To be filled by your presence.

Come, step inside the shrine you long abandoned;

Though hardened from the cold,
I exist there amorphously still...

In patience here I lay in wait,
For you to reignite my flame.

I know you’ll be back one day...
Step in...
...Only you can make me whole again.
Jai Hind!
